Hello, my pets. Today’s inaugural song of the week is “The Space in Between,” the first track released by Trent Reznor’s new group, How to Destroy Angels.
To anyone who thought Reznor would lose his teeth post-Nine Inch Nails: you were wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong. “The Space in Between” is an unnerving exercise in sonic tension. The song crawls for three minutes, teasing several crescendos that neither come nor need to. Reznor’s wife, Mariqueen Maandig of West Indian Girl fame, sings with glassy-eyed detachment, spitting each vicious syllable out with perfect enunciation. The music is the darkest of trip-hop, tinged with the slightest bit of industrial. Think Massive Attack meets The Knife, echoing with the ghosts of NIN.
The video for the track depicts a fucked-up scene that is gradually engulfed in flames, and “The Space In Between” is just like this slow-building fire: deadly, smoky, and over before anyone knows it. Check it out below.
