Phantogram – Futuristic Casket
from Eyelid Movies, 2010 (Barsuk)
This smattering of aural badassery first met my ears via AOL Radio’s “New Indie First” channel. Phantogram describe their music as “street beat,” but it might make more sense to draw a line between their dubsteppy, dark and dreamy electronica and that of early ’90s trip-hop. “Futuristic Casket” is a cut above the rest on an outstanding debut album: it starts off jarringly dancy before morphing into a delightful amalgam of spy movie soundtrack and eerie ambient trance. Witch house could be this good if it spent less time on the passe apathy and more time on the actual music.
